Coffee in Vienna....

Vienna's coffeehouse tradition dates back to the 17th century and is an integral part of the city's culture. Known for their elegant interiors, rich coffee blends, and pastries like the famous Sachertorte, they remain beloved hubs for socializing and intellectual exchange. It was recognized by UNESCO in 2011 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.

My favorite Hotel in Vienna "MOTEL ONE" Wien Staatsoper.

The Hotel blends modern design with subtle nods to Vienna's classical heritage. The interiors feature contemporary elements - sleek furnishings, clean lines, and artistic touches inspired by the opera and surrounding culture. The combination creates a stylish, comfortable environment that honors both the old and new facets of Vienna.

Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral, a Gothic icon from the 12th century, stands beside the modern Haas House, a sleek glass structure, blending the city's historic charm with contemporary design. I have to say: It is breathtaking!!!

During my time living and working in Switzerland, I very much enjoyed visiting my dear friend's beautiful HOME right on the Thunersee. The place was something out of a dream - peaceful, picturesque, with a view that could quiet any mind.

There's something about the scent of fresh baked bread that brings me right back to my Oma's (grandmother's) kitchen. She made the most amazing farmer's bread - warm, crusty, and full of love. It wasn't just bread - it was a piece of HOME.

One of my favorite bread recipes:

  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1 cup dark rye flour
  • 1 tbsp flaxseed meal (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 3/4 cups of cold water (or a little more as needed)
  1. Combine all the dry ingredients in a big bowl and add cold water - mix with a wooden spoon. No kneading necessary, which is a big plus!
  2. Cover with plastic wrap and let the dough mixture rise (room temperature) for 12 hours. Overnight works the best for me.
  3. Pour the bread dough on a heavily dusted with flour dishtowel (dough is relatively wet). Use the rest of the dishtowel to cover the dough.
  4. Let it rise and rest for another 1 - 1 1/2 hours.
  5. You need a cast iron pot with lid (5-Quart).
  6. Preheat the oven to 480 F.
  7. Put the dough into a seasoned cast iron pot, cover and bake for 5 minutes (480 F).
  8. Reduce the temperature to 445 F and bake for 30 minutes.
  9. Remove the lid and bake for another 20 minutes.
  10. Remove the bread from the pot and let it cool on a cooling wrack.

I love my freshly baked bread the best when it is still lukewarm. A little butter melting into the warm crust, a sprinkle of freshly ground pepper, and to finish it off, finely chopped chives. Give it a try! Enjoy....

During my years in the Seattle area, Palisade remains one of my favorite dining experiences. Located in the Elliott Bay Marina on Magnolia's south side, it offers a stunning view of the downtown skyline - especially at sunset. Their alder-planked sockeye salmon is unforgettable, bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. It's a place that truly captures the essence of the Pacific North West.

If you ever get the chance, take a trip to the Indiana Dunes National Park, it's well worth the visit. The views are stunning, and on a sunny day, you can even spot the Chicago skyline shimmering across Lake Michigan - truly a beautiful sight!

SERVUS from VIENNA......

If you're ever in Vienna, a visit to the Onyx Bar at the iconic Haas Haus is a must! Located just steps away from St. Stephen's Cathedral at the Stephansplatz, the bar offers an incredible view of the cathedral's stunning Gothic architecture through floor-to-ceiling windows. It's a perfect spot for enjoying a cocktail while soaking in the atmosphere of one of Vienna's most famous squares. Whether you are there for a relaxed drink or to take in the vibrant energy of the city, the Onyx Bar combines modern style with a prime location for an unforgettable experience! Cheers.....

Discover Trześniewski in Vienna's 1st district - a charming spot for a quick bite. Founded in 1902 by Franz Trześniewski from Kraków, they have been serving its famous open-faced sandwiches for over a century. A true local favorite and hidden gem. It is always my first stop for a little bite before I stroll through the city.

One of the highlights of this trip was visiting the Viktor Frankl Museum with my dear sister. It was a deeply moving experience that offered powerful insight into his life, work, and the enduring strength of the human spirit.

GOOD MORNING.......

Mushroom Hunting......what a treat!!!

One of my most cherished childhood memories is going mushroom hunting with my mum and dad. We'd wander through the forest, baskets in hand, breathing in the earthy scent of damp soil and pine  needles. There was something magical about those quiet mornings - just the three of us, completely absorbed in the search.

The thrill of spotting a mushroom hidden beneath leaves or moss was always exciting, but nothing compared to the joy of finding my favorite: PORCINI. I still remember the burst of happiness every time I uncovered one - rich, plump and perfect. It felt like nature was offering us a little treasure, and we were lucky enough to receive it.

To this day, that simple experience brings me warmth and nostalgia. It wasn't just about the mushrooms - it was about the connection, the laughter, and the feeling of being in tune with both nature and family.

It is harvest time!
